OUR HISTORY

Aspire Coaching

Aspire Coaching was formed in August 1999 by friends Stuart Smith and Nigel Gardner. Both were working as community coaches for Portsmouth FC but wanted to be able to bring coaching nearer to their home town of Petersfield and it's surrounding areas. Both had a love of sport and a desire to provide grassroots sports provision to local children, by offering high quality coaching to help those children develop and find their own passions in sport and physical activity.

By providing children with competence, it in turn improves their confidence and knowledge of the importance of physical activity to maintain healthy lifestyles for future school life and adulthood. This could be as simple as cycling, swimming or running, but it was always about putting children at the heart of the learning and providing them with a positive experience and outlook on being active

Stuart has since moved on to pastures new, working as a teacher at Havant & Southdown College delivering B-TEC and A-Level PE and now working as a PE teacher with one of our first schools at Mayville High School in Southsea. He still keeps up to date with the company and pops along to some of our holiday courses as his nephews regularly attend.

Nigel has continued with the company now, delivering sessions for over 24 years whilst taking on the full running of the company. Aspire has remained in the local area of Petersfield and it's surrounding areas working alongside many schools, clubs and associations for over 10 and 15 years.

Aspire has been fortunate enough to see some talented youngster flourish and go on to compete at high levels in sport from our grassroots beginnings.

OUR SUCCESS STORIES

Nigel Gardner

For over 20 years Nigel has been at the forefront of Aspire Coaching. Unlike other sports coaching company directors he continues to actively deliver coaching sessions to children through PE, after school clubs, breakfast clubs, holiday courses and evening and weekend football sessions everyday. He also takes on the all encompassing aspects of running the company and managing a small team of fantastic coaches.

He is driven by a passion to help and inspire children to the best of his ability, encouraging children to want to become their best and hopes Aspire reflects this. He believes many coaches think you are only good if you coach elite athletes, but through many years experience he knows that without grassroots coaches there would be no elite athletes. By coaching a mixture of ages and abilities everyday gives great satisfaction and he believes grassroots coaching is just as important as elite coaching.

Beginning with an Honours Degree in Leisure Management, whilst with Aspire, Nigel has achieved his Level 5 Certificate in Primary School PE and School Sport Specialism and Multi-Skills Level 2 enabling him to help support schools further with their PE provision. Grassroots football is his 'bread and butter' obtaining his FA Level 2, Youth Modules, FA Level 1 Futsal, FA Mentoring Adults and an Open University Course in Coaching Others to Coach. His longstanding commitment to Petersfield Town Juniors Football Club started at the first playing age of 9 years old continuing to the end at U16s. The following season of 1992-93 he became a volunteer coach for Petersfield Town Juniors helping in the mini section where he remains now 28 years later as Head of Mini Football. Nigel also volunteers on the executive committee of the club as Charter Standard Officer.

He hugely enjoys his diverse and varied role is proud to be able to provide sport and physical activity to the community

"Our son Seb has been doing coaching with Nigel and Aspire for 2 years. He is usually quite anxious about trying new things but the supportive environment provided by the Aspire coaches has really helped him grow in confidence and he really looks forward to going to holiday camps. They offer a huge range of activities that are engaging and fun, and he comes home happy and tired at new end of the day. We can’t recommend Aspire highly enough."

My son has attended 2 football camps this year and he loved them both! I was a little anxious and worried as my son has a number of severe allergies but from the moment I made an inquiry through to the end of camp he was well looked after and kept safe which meant I could work and not have to worry. Nigel runs a great team and from what I have seen so far everything runs very smoothly and the children all love it. I have no doubt my son will be going for years to come during the school holidays and I would always highly recommend Aspire to anyone looking for football/sports camps during the holidays.
